Lois McMaster Bujold, winner of every major award in science fiction, will be on hand at the 1998 Robot Exhibition to meet a miniature search and rescue robot named in her honor. The robot Bujold is one of many intelligent mobile robots which will be interacting with the crowd as part of the reception.
The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase advances in robots which can move, think, and respond to the world. A highlight of the live event is the demo from Sony with a group of their robot puppies: robots which look and act like dogs, including responding to commands and petting, and chasing balls. In addition to the robot dogs, a robot waiter will be serving hors d'ouerves, showing that robots are able to work side by side with humans. Another demonstration will show how robots can be used in education. In most cases, the robots use the same programming approaches used by search engines on the world wide web, computer games, and interactive cinema.
The press is invited to the reception, and dedicated interviews and
live demonstrations can be arranged for Monday in addition to at the reception.
