DAS Luther J. Porter Educator Award
The Delaware Astronomical Society (DAS) created in 1999 the Luther J. Porter Educator Award for astronomy education and is welcoming nominations for the 2001 Award. Click here for the nomination form.
Luther J. Porter, an African-American, was a long time member and devoted supporter of the Delaware Astronomical Society and served for many years as its Treasurer. Born in 1908, he graduated from the old Howard High School in Wilmington where he was valedictorian, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1929 near the top of his class. He had a career in teaching that spanned more than thirty years. He was also a successful businessman, a talented mathematician, a champion bridge player, and a dedicated amateur astronomer.
The Luther J. Porter Award intends to honor each year, at the Society's annual dinner meeting each May, an individual who has made a substantial contribution to astronomy education and/or awareness, in either a professional capacity or as a dedicated amateur. Nominees need not be professional astronomers.
The successful candidate for this award and his or her guest will receive invitations to the Delaware Astronomical Society's annual dinner meeting in May of the year of the award. His or her name will also appear on a plaque on permanent display at the Mount Cuba Astronomical Observatory (MCAO).
Nominations should be submitted on the nomination form to the DAS Awards Committee Chair, Box 652, Greenville, DE 19899. Individuals may nominate themselves and/or other persons they believe deserving of this recognition. The deadline for receipt of the form for each year's nominations at the above address is March 15th, and the winner will be announced on April 15th.
