Meet & Geek Overview

The First Meet & Geek was quite a success! What we did not have in numbers, we made up for in fun and community. The Meet & Geek is a very nice opportunity to interact and for the pre-majors or early majors to feel free to ask questions about whatever is on their minds.

What we learned...

What The PreMajors Would Like to Know

Basically, Everything!

  • What classes should I take?
  • What professors are the best for which courses?
  • Who should I ask about X? (class schedules, internships, research, ...)
  • What can I do with a CS or CS-related major?
  • How did you decide to be a CS major?
  • How did you decide to go to graduate school?
  • What is graduate school like?

And many, many other things.

Future Events

The main goal is very informal events where people can talk. In future events, we will also include declared women majors as well as professors. One suggestion was a social at a professor's house.

Possible topics for event discussion: career opportunities, introduction to undergraduate research opportunities, and fellowship, scholarship, and internship opportunities.

Promotion

More personal promotion is necessary to draw the interested crowd. Most of the women who attended were directly emailed or talked to by a professor or TA. We will encourage the more in-touch undergraduate majors to help organize and advertise the events.
