  • The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography, Simon Singh
A wonderful, wonderful book. I recommend it to anyone remotely interested in or working with cryptography at any level! Well written, intelligent, and entertaining. Simon Singh thoroughly engages the reader in the epic battle between cryptologist and cryptanalysis. So many historic moments in the past 500 years have hinged on the strength of a cipher!

  • A Short History of Nearly Everything, Bill Bryson
I love British humour, and Bill Bryson uses it to great effect in his entertaining book. Unlike your average natural history tome, Bryson weaves in anecdotes about the scientists who made the discoveries--giving the reader an engaging picture of science as a whole, not just the natural events that shape it.

  • The First American: The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin, H.W. Brands
Brands does a great job of writing about the man, and not just his deeds in helping to shape America as we know it. As my first biography, I found it quite enjoyable.

  • The Greek Way, Edith Hamilton
Ms. Hamilton clearly adores ancient Greece! A great read if you'd like a glimpse into ancient Greek culture, but it can be a little slow at times.

  • Armchair Economist, Steven Landsburg
The economic thought process does not always conform to intuition. For a light and interesting introduction to economics, this is a great book. Also recommended for students in an introductory level economics class.
