The IEEE Computer Society has awarded Dr. Weisong Shi, Chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Delaware, the 2026 Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award. This prestigious honor recognizes his foundational contributions to edge computing and his transformative vision for autonomous mobility.
In a recent interview https://www.computer.org/publications/tech-news/insider-membership-news/2026-mccluskey-connected-autonomous with IEEE, Dr. Shi highlighted the necessity of moving processing power from the cloud to the “edge” to achieve the instant reaction times required by physical systems. His team at UD’s Connected and Autonomous Research (CAR) Lab is tackling massive industry bottlenecks, including developing the “DaVoS” safety framework for adaptive driving and “AVS,” an innovative storage system that treats autonomous vehicles like mobile data centers.
Dr. Shi is also bridging edge computing with smart health through the development of an autonomous wheelchair. Equipped with natural language processing and real-time health monitoring, the wheelchair navigates complex environments like hospitals—reflecting Dr. Shi’s long-term commitment to democratizing autonomy and ensuring mobility as a guaranteed right for all.
