Prospective Graduate Students

The Department of Computer and Information Sciences offers programs leading to the Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. The MS program, which is normally completed in four semesters of full-time study, prepares students for doctoral studies or for professional employment. The PhD program consists of additional course work beyond an MS degree and involves supervised research leading to a dissertation. We offer a broad range of courses at the graduate level and have active research programs on topics at the forefront of computer science and technology.

Our Department has 24 full-time faculty and about 110 graduate students. Our faculty members are recognized internationally for their research expertise. Their research is supported by numerous research grants from NSF, NIH, ARL, DOE, DARPA and other federal agencies and private corporations. Our faculty are on the editorial boards of scientific journals, serve as program committee chairs and members of program committees for major conferences, and are officers in international professional organizations. Five of our faculty have won the prestigious NSF Career Award and one is a recipient of the Department of Energy's Early Career Award.

Despite their extensive research and professional commitments, our faculty pride themselves on close, personal interaction with students in both their research groups and the courses they teach. Seven CIS faculty members have won the University of Delaware's Excellence-in-Teaching Award (an award given annually to only four out of 1200 faculty members university-wide) and one has received the University's Excellence-in-Advising Award.
